Nowtoo Sugi lives in Japan and likes to relax by creating awesome and unusually colourful works of latte art. It’s a truly delicious and delightful hobby.

Starting this past February, Sugi began using colored bartender syrups to, as the hobby artist says, “paint” on coffee. Sugi isn’t the only one to create colorful lattes, but is certainly one of the best.

So, for example, Sugi uses Blue Hawaii syrup for, well, blue and strawberry syrup for red or pink. The colors are mixed with steamed milk for variation.

I know a few of us who will be there (and hopefully having time to run off to a performance of our own after), and I want to know: what we can bring to help make a long night of passing Neil pens into a little bit of one of those mythical publishing parties for you? Hats? Noise makers? Adult beverages?

I will not be with Neil Gaiman on his tour for THE OCEAN AT THE END OF THE LANE as I am no longer his publicist, having left HarperCollins a little over two years ago. I will always be his cheerleader, though, and this is an excellent question that pertains to any big signing event.

In my experience on the other side of the table, there are three things to bring to a signing of this scale: enthusiasm, patience, and empathy.

- Enthusiasm

Your enthusiasm is essential. You’re excited to be at the event. The author is excited that you’re there. It’s catching. Let’s make the most of all being in the same place at the same time and have some fun! I mean, when will this ever happen again in this precise way, amirite?

- Patience

Boy oh boy, there are a LOT of people here. All lovely people. And they all have books by the author. Also scraps of paper and gifts and camera phones and there was that one time with the robot. But have no fear, if you are patient and allow your enthusiasm for the event to spill over into the waiting time on the signing line, you will be rewarded. Anticipation is half of the fun, after all.

- Empathy

We’re all in it together, folks. We have been from the beginning. It’s been a long night, but you’re a happier human being for having let those who are infirm or with little kids go to the front of the line. Be kind and considerate to those around you, more likely than not you’ll make good friends by the end of the evening. And remember that for as long as you’ve been waiting, the author has been signing. That enthusiasm you’ve had with you from the beginning will carry us through.

If all of these elements are together in equal measure, you’ll have just the right mix for an evening of mythic proportions.

Hats, noise makers, and adult beverages are entirely optional.

I met Elyse briefly at a Neil signing for Graveyard book and she was fantastic, friendly, and just all around awesome. I’m bummed I won’t see her again with Neil, but unless I missed another job move maybe I’ll see her if John Green tours through Atlanta again (I think the key message for Elyse is “keep working with my favorite authors please”).

We love this wonderful illustration promoting both the awesomeness of literacy and a brand new book by one of our favourite cartoonists, Jeffrey Brown.

Entitled Star Wars: Vader’s Little Princess, the book is a delightful collection of comics depicting the relationship between Darth Vader and Princess Leia had he been responsible for raising her. It’s a follow-up to the equally awesome Star Wars: Darth Vader and Son in which the Dark Lord of the Sith is playing an active role as father to young Luke.

This is Star Wars imagined in a way you’ve never seen before. It’s cute, tender, and very funny. We think it’s pretty awesome.
